Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
